Sandvik installs its first Primary gyratory crusher – in record time

The first Sandvik Primary gyratory crusher, a CG820 was installed in the record time of only 18 days. This is the quickest known time for replacement of an old crusher including total installation of a new primary gyratory crusher.

Through this record, Sandvik Mining and Construction has set a new global benchmark, according to the customer, Tata Steel Ltd. The 18 days of installation consisted of dismantling the old crusher and two feeders, assembly and installation of the Sandvik CG820 primary gyratory crusher, erection of apron feeders, installation of VFD drive and complete automation. A replacement and installation of this size usually requires a time of at least 30 days. The crusher was supplied by Sandvik Mining and Construction in India to an iron ore mine site in Noamundi, for the processing of ore with a maximum feed size of 1,200 mm (47.2 in) and capacity of up to 3,500 mtph (3858 stph).

The mine site Noamundi, situated to the North-East of India, is known for the world class iron ore deposits. Tata Steel Ltd. is the world's sixth largest steel company, with an existing annual crude steel capacity of 28 million tonnes (617,3 million tons), operations in 24 countries and commercial presence in more than 50 countries. The CG820 primary gyratory crusher replaced a Fuller Trailor primary gyratory crusher in the plant. The replacement will lead to a modernization of the primary crushing stage, increased capacity, larger feed size intake and a more powerful drive.

Tata Steel Ltd. chose Sandvik as supplier due to its ability to present a technical superior design with such features as the spherical spider bearing, hydraulic adjustment, secured concave liners, hydraulic tank instrumentation system and the unique Automatic Setting Regulation System; ASRi™. In addition, delivery time was one of the key points in securing the order. The installation time was the shortest recorded at Tata Steel for a job of this magnitude.

"The Sandvik CG820 primary gyratory crusher supply will be a reference of major value since it is the first crusher of this type to be supplied by Sandvik and has been supplied to the world-renowned company Tata Steel Ltd. Moreover, the overall job of dismantling, installation and commissioning was a success in terms of time. I feel privileged to be part of the team and to have been present during the commissioning. There has been fantastic teamwork and cooperation between the Sandvik and the Tata Steel crews, showing a supreme motivation from all the team members who jointly made this possible in the incredible time of 18 days; Tata Steel engineers working together with the Sandvik team that comprised Sandvik engineers as well as our working associates, Nextgen/Dey Construction, keeping utmost safety as the top priority all made this possible in such short span of time, without any accident or injury," said Mr. Avijit Paul, Regional Product Line manager, Mine crushing.
