UNDERGROUND DRILLING

Stuttgart 21
Sandvik tunneling jumbos have been chosen to work in two parts of the Stuttgart 21 project so far. Stuttgart 21, a 117-km high-speed railway, will be connecting the German cities of Stuttgart, Ulm and Augsburg. The project was officially announced in 1994 and the construction started in February 2010. Scheduled to be completed by 2022, the project will replace Stuttgart's main terminus station with an underground-through station, which will be integrated into the 1 500 km-long Magistrale for Europe high-speed line connecting Paris, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Ulm, Munich, Vienna and Bratislava. Around half of the 117-km of the railroad will lead through tunnels which are the mainstay of the whole project. In the future, the trains will travel underground in the Stuttgart city center. Following the completion of the project, the journey between Stuttgart and Ulm will be reduced from 54 minutes to 28 minutes, and the journey from Stuttgart train station to the airport will take 8 minutes instead of the current 27 minutes.

Sandvik has a long relationship with Hochtief, covering previous projects such as Arge TLM NBS; Nürnberg-Ingolstadt and Lichtenfels tunnel. Sandvik has also been involved with Baresel and Kunz in Höhnberg/Füllbach tunnel as well as with Alpine Bemo in Dovrebanen in Norway and Markovec tunnel in Slovenia.

High Speed Line - Madrid-Galicia, Spain
Madrid – Galicia high speed line project (2007-2013) gives a new access to Galicia. It will start at the junction of the Madrid-Valladolid Line in Olmedo and end in Santiago de Compostela, where it links with the Galician Atlantic Rail Corridor. The high speed line will be a 434.86 km long route, to be installed with double electrified track in UIC gauge (1.435 mm) and ASFA and ERTMS signaling. The line is designed to handle a maximum speed of 350 km/h. It will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the 2007-2013 Galicia Operational Program, with estimated funding over two thousand Million Euros. Several contractors that have been awarded a sub-section of the project trust in Sandvik tunneling equipment.
Subsections Cercedelo Prado and El Corno Tunnel (right side)Both subsections are formed by two tunnels in just one way with similar length. Estimated lead time is 33-36 months.

MECHANICAL CUTTING

National Flood Relief Project (NFRP), Malta
The National Flood Relief Project, worth €56 million spread over four phases and spanning over 16 kilometres of underground tunnels, will relieve the flooding problems hitting the central part of Malta while topping up the national water reserve with a further 650,000 cubic meters of water.

The first phase covers Attard, Naxxar, Birkirkara and Msida and ends in Ta' Xbiex while the second covers the central Zebbug area and flows into Wied Qirda. The third phase starts in Zebbug and extends through Marsa and Qormi. This part does not involve tunneling but a replacement and reorganization of culverts and bridges currently hindering the passage of water. The fourth and final phase is an underground tunnel covering the Xghajra/Zabbar area. The tunnel height will vary from three to six meters and their depth is up to 50 meters from street level, with places reaching as little as six meters from the road surface. In the latter case, special reinforcements will be used to prevent both the collapse of the tunnel due to traffic and the eruption of the road due to excess water pressure.

A Sandvik MT520 roadheader is in operation in the first phase, excavation a cross section of about 40 sq. m. Its daily advance has been from 22 to 24 meters, with the rate increasing continuously.

LOADING

Brokke Nord, Norway
Sandvik LH514 was chosen to operate in a hydropower facility project in Bykle, Norway by the Swiss contractor Implenia. The project, worth 62.4 million Euros, is called Brokke Nord and it is scheduled to be finished by April 2014. The length of the tunnel is 11.5 km, with a 23 sq. m face size. The Sandvik LH514 excelled in the project, giving muck-out time of 1 hour, with niches 290 meters apart.

EXPLORATION

Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
Sandvik exploration rigs were chosen by Italian contractor Salini Construttori to operate at the GERDP (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project) project in Ethiopia. The Sandvik DE130 with NQ Wireline system and core barrel of 1,5 m will be used for core drilling investigating the body dam as well as for waterproofing injections if required. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is located at approximately 500 km Northwest of Addis Ababa, on the Blue Nile, in the Benishangul – Gumaz National Regional State. It will be the largest dam in Africa: 1800 meters long, 170 meters high with an overall volume of 10 million cubic meters. The works mainly consist of a roller compacted concrete (RCC) main dam, with two powerhouses installed at the toe of the dam. The total installed capacity will be 6000MW and generation capacity of 1,000 Gwh/y. The project owner is Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).
