Sandvik introduces industry’s first SSAB Zero™ steel dump box for mining trucks at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL® 2024

Sandvik is underscoring its commitments to reduce CO2 emissions and further develop its underground truck portfolio, showcasing its 60-plus-ton Toro™ diesel-electric truck demonstrator equipped with a box manufactured with SSAB Zero™ steel at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL® 2024.

Sandvik’s flagship large trucks, Toro™ TH663i and Toro™ TH551i, are now available with optional dump boxes made with SSAB Zero™ steel. When Sandvik manufactures a box with SSAB Zero™ steel, the cradle-to-gate CO2 emissions are 70 percent less than those of a traditional box. The steel meets all the required quality and performance standards of traditional steel, and doesn’t add any extra weight to the equipment.

Sandvik becomes the first underground mining OEM to introduce SSAB Zero™ steel boxes as an available, commercialized product.

“Our commitment is clear: enabling our customers to make more sustainable choices, as soon as the technology is available,” said Saija Kuusisto-Lancaster, Vice President, Strategy and M&A, Load and Haul at Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. “Recognizing the global significance of CO2 emissions from steel, this is a big step in the right direction. I am proud that we already have a product available for the market. But our ultimate goal? To create products made of 100 percent fossil-free steel.”

“We’re excited to be partnering with Sandvik in introducing the world’s first SSAB ZeroTM steel dump box for mining trucks,” said Christina Friborg, Head of Sustainability at SSAB. “SSAB Zero™ is based on recycled steel produced with fossil-free electricity and biofuels, resulting in virtually zero carbon emissions. With our carbon emission-free steels, we’re changing the way steel is produced and offering a more sustainable alternative for our customers.”

Toro™ TH663i and Toro™ TH551i are industry-leading, proven underground trucks, with more than 1,000 units delivered to mines around the world. Originally introduced at MINExpo INTERNATIONAL® 2012 and initially designed to meet specific customer needs in Australia, the trucks have been continuously developed over the years based on valuable customer feedback and become market leaders in its size class throughout the world.

The trucks’ use-phase emissions can be reduced by selecting renewable fuel. Both trucks can utilize paraffinic diesel fuel that meets the requirements of the EN 15940 standard. This significantly reduces emissions of CO, CO2, HC, NOx and diesel particulates.

Now, Sandvik large truck customers can reduce their carbon footprint even further by choosing dump boxes with reduced CO2 emissions.
